“This week: Be Delusional”
Every Monday morning, I open my (super cute) paper planner and write down a word or two as an intention for my week. A few months back, I surprised myself when I wrote “Delusional.”
I was working towards a huge vision with my work and it felt so out of reach. I set an intention to “be delusional” in pursuit of my desire. Being sensible had fallen short. The energy within me shifted immediately. The mere suggestion of giving myself this permission shook me. “Delusional? Ha! OK.”
There was humor and lightness.
There was a blissful relief.
There was an openness of possibilities.
There was a willingness to jump into a new game.
There are some desires that feel so goddamn elusive. There are things that you want so bad, and some days they can seem so completely out of reach.
You see others who seem to have “it” and they make it all look so easy. Meanwhile, here you are, doing the hell out of the work and the needle is barely moving.
When the thing you want feels this impossible to attain, often there is a narrative that tells you that the thing that you want somehow just isn’t for you.
“It” can be anything - a thriving business, a loving relationship, more money, the support of community, a fulfilling sense of purpose and passion.
Maybe you have little to no direct experience with what you want. Maybe no one in your family or circle has ever had it (e.g., been a thriving entrepreneur, had the kind of soul-connected love you desire, created a solid foundation of wealth). And no matter how hard you work towards it, there is little in your external world indicating that this is coming anytime soon.
It’s no wonder this frustrating experience is so common.
So much of the goal-setting / personal development / manifestation work out there falls short of acknowledging just how new some desires can be. There are few, honest examples of this experience.
We are also trained our entire lives to seek evidence in our surroundings and in our past for what will be in the future. It happens subconsciously every single day, and it keeps you stuck in a loop.
If what you want isn’t remotely in your context - how are you supposed to create it?
You’re going to need to create your own context.
For too many, the imperative is to create what you want out of thin air.
OK, then.
The moment calls for a wild and creative approach.
Enter, being delusional in your favor.
Here’s what is true:
The truth is that there is nothing that you can desire that is inherently incompatible with you.
The truth is that you can choose to align yourself with the energy of what you want.
The truth is that this choice to align with what you want will carry a unique weight for every human.
The truth is that we can train ourselves into a new reality.
The truth is that you too get to make this whole thing up for yourself.
That’s right.
Choosing to be delusional in your favor is a fun and deeply committed game of convincing yourself fully that everything you want is already yours and is already here. Yes, even if you feel ridiculous, naive, stupid. Especially if you do.
It’s about quieting the voice that says “But that’s not realistic” or “That could never happen” and instead use our wildest imagination and playful dreaming in our favor.
Here, anything is possible. Welcome.
When coupled with Shadow Work, this approach will move you into actually believing that what you want is for you, melting away the doubt, and knowing in your bones that your desire is yours and its fruition is absolutely inevitable (past evidence, be damned).
As you continue with this practice, you train your mind into this new state, you embody the energy, you expand your capacity. You get comfortable in this brand new place. And from here - you take action, rooted in trust, possibility, and knowing.
You’ll know yourself to be a powerful magician. Creating things out of thin air is your jam.
Below are three ways you can start exploring this for yourself:
Get clear on the energy you are embodying:
Sit down and take a few deep breaths. Connect with the version of you who is already “here”. You’ve made it! What you want is here. It is here! How does this feel within you? Who is the version of you who finds themselves here? What qualities have you cultivated? Use sensorial cues to bring you in. How do you dress? What is your scent? What choices do you make? Write down all that comes to you in bullet points. Let this be a guide to implement immediately, as much as you can.
Suspend disbelief:
Spend time in the daydream and in the embodiment of having what you want. Notice your thoughts and feelings with curiosity. You can do this in increasing chunks of time. This is especially important if you’re feeling skeptical about this approach. Allow yourself a container - with a set timer - and a clear beginning and an end. For the duration of the timer (5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes increasingly) allow yourself to believe that it is here, that you having this is the most natural and obvious thing. I recommend you choose a symbol to carry around that you can see everyday as a reminder to come back here - with your thoughts and your decisions. It could be a piece of jewelry or a crystal in your purse.
Shadow Work:
This experience will be infinitely more effective when you are simultaneously working on dissolving the charge of your blocks and integrating your will - through Shadow Work. These practices will be a beautiful complement to one another. Your Shadow Work will make room for your new thoughts and experience to take hold. And the expansion of this practice is sure to bring up some contractions along the way. Knowing your Shadow Work practice is active and available will help you move through these moments and not allow them to be paralyzing.
Ironically, when other practices are superficial or insufficient, Delusion is the most sensible approach to place yourself in the context of what you want, imagine and create your own new reality.
The true power of this approach is in your commitment to consistency. Your choice to keep coming back here - to the place of your chosen delusion again and again - will compound and strengthen.
Over time, you will find that your beliefs have shifted.
And when shifts occur at the identify and belief level - it is the core, most transformational level of change. When you know yourself to be someone who will absolutely have what they want - your will is united, and you simply create it.
You can start the moment you wake up tomorrow morning.
